Hey y’all! Life has been life-ing, but I’m back and ready to chit chat. I’ve had several people ask me about my experience with Lupron Depot for my fibroids, so let’s chat about that. First things first, what is a fibroid? Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus, affecting millions of women worldwide. While they are generally harmless, they can lead to uncomfortable symptoms like heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and pressure. If you would like more detailed information, please click here. One standard treatment option for managing fibroids is Lupron, a medication which may reduce fibroid size and alleviate associated symptoms. This blog post will explore everything you need to know about taking Lupron for fibroids, its benefits, side effects, and a sprinkle of my personal experience.
Does Lupron Work
Lupron is a type of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist, and it works by suppressing the production of estrogen and progesterone in the body. Estrogen and progesterone are hormones that can stimulate fibroid growth. Lupron is said to help shrink the fibroids and alleviate symptoms by lowering these hormone levels.
Potential Benefits of Taking Lupron for Fibroids
a) Reducing Fibroid Size: Clinical studies have shown that Lupron can significantly reduce the size of fibroids, leading to relief from symptoms (Yes, please).
b) Alleviating Heavy Menstrual Bleeding: Heavy menstrual bleeding is one of the most common symptoms of fibroids. Lupron may help regulate menstrual cycles and reduce the amount of bleeding.
c) Preserving Fertility: For women who wish to preserve their fertility, Lupron can be used as a temporary treatment before surgical interventions like myomectomy.
Administering Lupron
Lupron is available as an injection, administered by a healthcare professional, or self-injected at home (but girl, go to the doctor). The dosage and duration of treatment will depend on the severity of the fibroids and the individual’s medical history.
Potential Side Effects:
While Lupron can be an effective treatment, it may cause some side effects, including:
a) Menopausal Symptoms: Due to reduced estrogen, women may experience hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness similar to menopausal symptoms.
b) Bone Density Loss: Long-term use of Lupron may decrease bone density, which can be a concern for some women, especially those at risk for osteoporosis.
c) Mood Changes: Some individuals may experience mood swings or emotional changes while taking Lupron.
Important Considerations:
Before starting Lupron treatment, having an open and detailed discussion with your healthcare provider is crucial. They will assess your medical history and current health status and determine if Lupron is the right option. Additionally, Lupron may not be suitable for everyone, and alternative treatments are available for fibroids. These include myomectomy, uterine artery embolization, and magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound.
My Personal Experience
Now that we have the textbook information out of the way let’s talk about my personal experience. If you know my story, then you know my largest fibroid was huge (if you don’t know my story, see here). I was so miserable due to my symptoms that I was willing to try almost anything I could to shrink my largest fibroid before surgery. Lupron was literally a last-ditch effort for me pre-myomectomy.
Y’all, it was not fun for me at all. I had all of the side effects. I was sweating all of the time. It was the middle of Winter, and I was hot all day, every day. My attitude was terrible, probably because I could not ever get comfortable. I was a real-life Jekyll and Hyde. I have no idea if I experienced vaginal dryness because sex was not even a thought. Thankfully, my husband is patient in more ways than one :).
On top of it all, it did not work. My fibroids did not shrink, and my symptoms did not lessen.

Key Takeaways
For some, Lupron may be a valuable option for managing fibroids and reducing associated symptoms. However, it’s essential to weigh its benefits against potential side effects and consider alternative treatments. I’d like to point out that consultation with a qualified healthcare provider is critical in deciding the most appropriate treatment plan for your unique needs. Remember, early diagnosis and timely intervention can significantly improve the quality of life for women living with fibroids.
