If you’re reading this, it’s too late. You’re already pregnant (or whatever Drake said).
But for real, if you are like me, you may be in that stage of life where it seems like everyone you know is popping up pregnant (it’s in the water chile). You want to buy something precious for the little bundle of joy, but you also got bills cause life don’t stop life-ing every time one of your homegirls see that little plus sign on a stick. Don’t fret my pet. There are plenty of great baby shower gift ideas, even if you are on a budget.
First off, if mama has a registry, get there early, sort that thang from low to high and get it popping. But if you were tardy for the party and need some suggestions, here are some of the most used gifts I received that should not break the bank.
Baby Bath Essentials. Although we love that new baby smell, at some point baby gotta baze (country girl translation: bathe). Bath time can be a fun, but challenging experience for new moms. My kid is 12.5 months and it still takes two of us to get it done most nights. Bath essentials is always a great idea. A bundle with baby soap, shampoo, lotion and diaper rash cream makes for an excellent and practical gift. I also love seeing my freshly washed baby in these cute little bath robes. Pair a robe with some little soft bath towels and here you have two inexpensive baby shower gift ideas.
Baby Swaddle Blankets. I used to love seeing a swaddled baby. It just seemed so peaceful. Then, I had a baby lol. Mane, my boy would break out of that thing 0.2 seconds after I thought I had him in perfectly. If you can find one that prevents the little magician from getting out, that’s a plus. This Halo swaddle ended up being my favorite because it did not take me all day to get him into it and he could not veni vidi vici his way out. Overall, swaddle blankets are incredibly useful for new moms. They help to keep the baby warm and cozy and are perfect for wrapping the baby up for sleep. Look for blankets that are made from soft, breathable materials that are gentle on the baby’s delicate skin.
Books. It is never too early to get baby’s library started. The little one may not be able to read yet, but he/she can listen. Research has shown, the earlier parents read to baby, the better. We all love the usual suspects, such as Dr. Suess, but also mix in some variety. We love biblical stories, black history books and anything that contributes to baby learning. You can grab a few books and stay within a reasonable budget, which makes books one of my top baby shower gift ideas.
Diaper Caddy. A diaper caddy is an excellent gift for mamas who need to keep everything organized and easily accessible. Look for a caddy that is compact enough to fit on a changing table or a dresser and being aesthetically pleasing is also a plus. It should have enough compartments to hold all the essential items like diapers, wipes, and diaper cream. This one worked great for me.
Baby Milestone Blanket. A milestone blanket is a fun and creative way for new moms to document their baby’s growth. They usually have designs that include numbers and milestones that can be used to track the baby’s growth over the first year. Etsy has several of these for reasonable prices. This gift is not only practical, but it’s also a cherished keepsake that the family will hold on to for years to come.
Nursing Cover. If the new mom plans on breastfeeding, a nursing cover can be a thoughtful baby shower gift idea. It allows mama to nurse her baby comfortably in public without feeling self-conscious. Look for covers made from breathable materials that provide adequate coverage. It was rare that I felt the need to use a cover (Win and I were the whip that thang out at Autozone type duo), but when I did use one, this apron style cover was my fave.
Boba Wrap Baby Carrier. After I figured out how to actually put it on (it was a chore at first), this was a lifesaver. I wore Win everywhere. He loved the natural bounce he got with every step I took. He would nap in it while I worked around the house and I’d wear him to the store so I could shop hands free. If you wanna help mama out, grab her a boba wrap.
If all else fails, you can always go with Baby Clothes. New moms can never have enough baby clothes. Look for onesies, footed sleepers, or rompers made from soft and breathable fabrics. Keep in mind that babies grow very quickly, so it is best to buy clothes in larger sizes. Note: If you get sleepers, no snaps please. Ain’t nobody got time to be trying to fool with snaps when they’re exhausted at 3 am, mmmk!
Bonus: Although, it’s called a baby shower, don’t forget about the baby mama. She will always appreciate a gift card for or towards food or some type of self-care.
